Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. After medical school and residency training, orthopedic surgeons often complete sub-specialty training in specialties such as hand and upper extremity, shoulder and elbow, total joint reconstruction, pediatric orthopedics, foot and ankle surgery, spine surgery, musculoskeletal oncology, surgical sports medicine, and orthopedic trauma.
