Thomas was raised in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1984. He completed orthopaedic surgery residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in 1995 and went on to provide orthopaedic surgical care for the Air Force for four additional years. He completed specialized fellowship training at the Hughston Sports Medicine Foundation in Columbus, Georgia in 2000 with selected emphasis on shoulder surgery and received the Hughston Shoulder certificate. Dr. Chopp is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and a fellow of the American Academy of orthopaedic surgery. He has practiced orthopaedic surgery for the past twenty years and is now in partnership with Dr. Thomas Goodwin.
