F. Ames Smith Jr., MD

Physician Biography

Dr. F. Ames Smith Jr. is a board-certified general and breast surgeon who has focused his practice exclusively on the assessment and management of women with clinical breast issues based on symptoms, abnormal imaging, or strong family history and both men and women who have high risk for cancer based on genetic predisposition. He established and has led the Boise Breast Clinic and Hereditary Cancer Risk Clinic since March of 2024 with the mission of developing a community of practice in concert with local, regional, and national experts. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University in 1980, earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1984 and completed surgical training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1990. His surgical practice spanned over 30 years first in Austin from 1990 to 2012, and later in Seattle from 2012 to 2022, where he served as Director of Breast Surgery and the Polyclinic Hereditary Cancer Risk Clinic. Dr. Smith has received numerous commendations for quality and patient satisfaction over the course of his career. He is married to Dr. Charlotte H. Smith, who is a practicing Physiatrist (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation), and has two grown children. Natives of Texas originally, the Smiths enjoy the beautiful Idaho outdoors, family time, and being part of an exceptional medical community.
