Physician Biography
Dr. Sophia Ambruso, is a board-certified nephrologist who cares for patients with chronic kidney disease, hypertension, dialysis needs, and complex kidney conditions. She joined Idaho Nephrology Associates in 2026 and is excited to care for patients and families throughout the Treasure Valley.
Dr. Ambruso earned her medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. She completed her internal medicine residency and served as Chief Resident at the University of Washington–Boise Internal Medicine Residency Program, and then completed advanced fellowship training in nephrology at the University of Colorado.
She previously practiced at the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center and served as Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where she was deeply involved in patient care, teaching, and mentoring future physicians.
Dr. Ambruso is also the creator of ABC Kidney PhysioSim (www.abckidney.com), an interactive, animated educational program designed to make kidney physiology easier to understand for students, clinicians, and patients. This work has received national recognition for innovation in medical education.
She serves in editorial and educational leadership roles with Kidney International Reports and the KI Reports Community, helping translate new kidney research into clear, accessible learning for clinicians around the world.
Her clinical interests include chronic kidney disease progression, resistant hypertension, cardiac kidney metabolic (CKM) syndrome, diabetic kidney disease, fluid and electrolytes, stones and helping patients understand their condition so they can be active partners in their care.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Ambruso enjoys spending time with her family, being outdoors, and creating educational tools that improve how people learn about health.
